Comoros : Christian Church profaned
The Moroni Protestant Church has been desecrated by unidentified people with obscene words written in black ink on the walls. The paper "L’Archipel" said on Monday that a police enquiry has so far not identified the culprits. The obscene words are in broken French with the authors writing about hatred against Christians. The leader of the small protestant community in the Comoros and assistant of the consul of Madagascar in Moroni identified as the Reverend Willy, who was visibly stunned by the desecration, said he had not seen anything like that before. "We have been here for 30 years and have never seen anything similar. We have never been worried in the practice of our religion," Rev. Willy said, adding that he wanted to "to keep cohabiting peacefully". Some 98 per cent of the Comoros population is Muslims. He said in his opinion, the sacrilege was "an isolated act" by people who were being "manipulated" by a group for hidden motives he cannot fathom. (Tuesday 13 May - 01:54)

Kruger Park in South Africa now a poaching ground
South Africa’s world famous Kruger National Park has become a hot spot for the poaching of mammals, according to the Ministry of Environmental Affairs and Tourism. The Ministry revealed here that over the last four years, at least 44 white rhinos and 31 buffaloes were killed by poachers. In total, 249 mammals were killed by poachers in Kruger during this period, it said. There was admittedly a meaningful drop in the number of animals reportedly poached in 2007, compared to the previous years, but these figures remain disturbingly high, especially for white rhino. The Ministry has also revealed the extraordinarily high levels of poaching of marine species in the Table Mountain National Park. The figure increased over each of the last three years to 8,665 in 2007. (Monday 12 May - 13:57)

Against all odds, Zimbabwe’s Dynamos football club at the weekend booted out Tunisia’s Etoile du Sahel, African Champions League title holder, of this year’s competition away from home. The Zimbabweans took a slender 1-0 lead into the weekend match in Sousse, Tunisia, and, in a rare feat, beat Etoile du Sahel 1-0 on the club’s home turf to progress to the next round on a 2-0 aggregate. The lone goal was scored by Benjamin Marere in the first stanza of the match. The victory, the biggest upset of weekend African Champions League matches, sent Dynamos supporters into wild celebrations back home. The club is the reigning soccer champion in Zimbabwe but, paired against Etoile du Sahel - and away from home - few had given Dynamos a chance. (Monday 12 May - 13:47)
