Quoting the Army radio, Israeli newspaper Jerusalem Post said Tuesday afternoon the crash occurred when Grant and his family were due to board a plane, after a private tour of the capital Windhoek.

Grant and his family were reportedly standing on the tarmac, preparing to board a plane when an incoming plane failed to activate its landing wheels and crashed into a nearby forest.

Gratia Tjikununa, aircraft accident officer at the ministry of works and transport, confirmed the accident but refused to disclose further details.

“We have sent our senior officers to investigate the matter and we expect a feed back as soon as possible,” Tjikununa said in response to media inquiries.

Small aircrafts in Namibia have been dubbed ’flying coffins’ following numerous accidents which in some cases involved foreigners.

Five Israelis businessmen died after a plane they were travelling in crashed in a Windhoek suburb soon after take-off from Eros airport.

Grant and his family came into Namibia early this month and has been touring some of the country’s tourist resorts.

Grant coached English football giants Chelsea last season.
